Home is Where the House is
Written by Samuel Murray
There has been a change in viewpoints on house music, this genre beginning to regularly enter the charts and be taken on by bigger artists. People are embracing what house music is all about and I love it- find below some snippets from this year and also a playlist of such tracks that are gaining major popularity.
This year has been a great year for house music, some of which have been topping charts all across the world, both featuring Calvin Harris: ‘Promises’ by Sam Smith and ‘One Kiss’ by Dua Lipa.
Other tracks to enter the charts were ‘Spread Love (Paddington)’ by Boston Bun & DVNO, and ‘Panic Room’ by Au/Ra and CamelPhat. Panic Room follows the hugely successful ‘Cola’ by CamelPhat & Elderbrook, which followed a much more traditional style of house in beat and repetition of lyrics.
Besides the charts, house music has become all the more a diverse genre, including elements of funk, trap and even dubstep. There appears to be a shift in the tides in terms of the efforts to professionally songwrite and put a composition together, rather than the more orthodox method of slowly taking digital elements and putting them together to create house tracks.
This house playlist combines some of the bigger names such as Armand Van Helden and Gorgon City, with fairly unknown artists bringing forward some great basslines. It works well as a leave-on with a twelve second crossfade, nevertheless, I thought I would feature some of my real favourites for you to listen to.
DJ E-Clyps - Captain Ratchet (Album Edit)
Infectiously good, deep house song. Quirky in many ways, and I love the snare sound that almost resembles a broom sweeping. DJ E-Clypse is not a well-known DJ, but if he continues forward with this style, he could well be in the future.
Aaron Smith, Luvli - Dancin' (Krono Remix)
This is a track that’s gained a bit of hype, and for some reason multiple videos to clips of characters from The Simpsons. Honestly, I do not understand the meme business with this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6uLvYQw8JM
salute - Honey
A chilled track with catchy lyrics that would work well as a floor filler, concentration track or background sound- it is a diverse track that almost feels like a masterful remix.
Flume, Disclosure - Never Be Like You ft. Kai (Disclosure Remix)
Speaking of remixes, this Disclosure remix of the great track Never Be Like You takes on repetition in quite a brave manner,
FUTURECLUB, Pepper Rose, Alex Ross - Next Dollar (ft. Pepper Rose) Alex Ross Remix
Another fantastic house remix taking the essential elements of the original song, retaining the same composition, great vocals by Pepper Rose and weaving in a bewildering bassline and slower, refrained periods to make a really wholesome sounding house track.
